The Breslin Center Renovation At Michigan State University

Another example of Tectonics vast capabilities and dedication to creating solutions.

In October of 2015, MSU announced the multimillion-dollar renovation and expansion of the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Barton Malow, an esteemed construction company with a renowned resume in the Sports and Special Events market, partnered with Tectonics to help bring the concourse of the Breslin Center to life.

Most recognized as the home of the Michigan State Spartans men’s and women’s basketball teams, the Breslin Center has also hosted music performers and productions, conferences and career fairs, commencement ceremonies and more. With the opportunity to transform such a utilized facility on campus, the pressure was on to create and install a timeless design that encompassed the Spartan identity.

The challenge for Tectonics and Barton Malow was to turn the space into a visual experience while also improving the functionality of the concourse. Our team at Tectonics worked diligently with Barton Malow and the branding teams at MSU to create a modern and timeless solution. It was an all around team effort nailing down the fine details of each graphic, choosing the best suited materials, and examining the logistics of installation. Together, through a great deal of communication with every team involved, we discovered a modern concept that would transform the concourse and a production and installation plan to make it all happen.

Within the walls of Breslin, Tectonics designed, printed, and installed 75 full sized wall graphics printed on 3M LX 480 adhesive vinyl. Vinyl was applied directly to both cinder block and drywall ranging from 8’ x 6’ to as large as 96’ x 9.6’. The once bare walls were brought to life with modern designs using bright, colorful imagery of campus events and student life at MSU.

Just above the walls, around the inner ring of the concourse, Tectonics printed and installed 32 fabric pieces using Tectonics extrusion frames and dye sublimation prints of the Michigan State Greek pattern. Additionally, twenty 4’x15’ printed fabric banners reinforcing Michigan State brand campaign elements were installed utilizing Tectonics extrusion frames. Last but not least, hang three 24’ x 29’ fabric panels, each above a main entrance. The large graphics display a complimentary modern design, collaging imagery and the Spartan green beneath impactful statements that support the MSU identity.

This project is yet another example of Tectonics vast capabilities and will to create a solution. We exercised our expertise in design, architecture & décor solutions, dye sublimation graphicstension fabric architecture, extrusion, installation, quality, and service. This project, like many, required extreme attention to detail, precision at each stage of the process, and communication with all teams involved. From concept through installation, Tectonics always strives to exceed our partner’s expectation.
